How to solder straight male pin headers

Read as Markdown

For a straight male through-hole header, secure the unpowered board, tack one pin, then inspect the cooled alignment before finishing the row. Read the linked soldering preparation and joint-making instructions before heating if this is your first joint. Heat pad and pin together, feed solder to their junction, remove solder then iron, and let it cool undisturbed. Confirm board-specific orientation first.

Confirm the parts and orientation first

Disconnect USB, batteries, and other power. Check the board model/revision, header type, pin count, and solder side in that board’s assembly instructions. Adafruit’s male-header example holds long pins in a breadboard and puts the board over the shorter ends; use it only if your board documentation agrees.

Before heating, verify each pin passes through its intended hole and the spacer sits as documented. If the reference or view does not establish the orientation, stop and recover it rather than guessing.

Tack, inspect, then decide whether to finish

Secure the board and header so they cannot move. Clean and tin the iron tip as its manufacturer directs. For the first tack, touch the tip to both pad and pin, then feed solder to that heated junction—not onto the iron alone—so it flows onto both. Remove solder, then iron; return the iron to its stand and leave the joint undisturbed to cool. Follow your solder/equipment instructions; there is no universal temperature or dwell time.

Inspect the cooled tack from top, side, and end against the board diagram. If visibly tilted or lifted, stop before committing the other pins; do not push or force it. Use board-specific rework instructions or ask a qualified person. If aligned, tack an opposite point if called for, recheck, then solder every remaining required pin with the same sequence. After cooling, count completed positions and look for omissions or obvious bridges. An LED or meter beep alone does not show that all pins are soldered or every joint is reliable.

Scroll the table sideways to read every column.

Hypothetical record: alignment passes, one pin is missing

Hypothetical record only; no board was assembled or tested. Instructions call for six header positions. Record: “one tack at position 1; top view aligned; side view shows spacer lifted at one end.” Decision: STOP before finishing the row. After a person corrects the tack using the board’s rework procedure, the cooled side and end views agree with the diagram; decision: finish the six positions. The final count is 5/6, with position 4 unsoldered: stop, complete that joint per the normal procedure, cool, and reinspect all six. Electrical function remains unverified.

Use the simplest evidence that answers the question

For a one-off, use the board diagram, direct inspection, or a phone photo. If an angle is unclear, add a side/end view; mark it unknown until then. LetItSee is optional for a new cooled checkpoint if already connected; the reader’s record, not the camera, keeps stages together.

Prompt to adapt

I am soldering a straight male through-hole header to a hobby breakout board. Board model/revision: [ ]; assembly instructions: [ ]; required positions: [ ]; power disconnected: [ ]; checkpoint: [ ]; top/side/end observations: [ ]. Compare visible orientation, seating, and alignment with the supplied board instructions. If an angle/reference is missing, say alignment is unknown and ask for it. Recommend stop or continue; do not infer electrical function, prescribe universal temperature/time, tell me to force-fit, or advise powering based on an image. Prefer direct inspection or attachment; request a still only for a cooled checkpoint if my camera is already connected.
